FARMITRON

Fragmented Lands, Fragmented Profits
The average land holding of around 80% of farmers from Assam, Odisha and West Bengal is less than 2 acres. Moreover majority of the farmers cultivate rice which is a high follows intensive crop with challenges of proper sowing, crop management, harvesting etc. Labour crisis is a very serious issue and also even if the issue is not present, the cost of cultivation to profit for rice is very low. To tackle these points, FARMITRON follows a unique strategy of crop management, sowing, harvesting to make the cultivation of rice very easy with much better profits. FARMITRON also identified the challenge of extreme climatic events such as hailstorms, floods etc. which poses a greater threat to rice cultivation. For the vegetable farmers, indiscriminate pesticide use has increased insect resistivity with very low effectiveness of used chemicals. The herbicides used in the paddy fields are becoming ineffective in controlling weeds and also leading to soil fertility loss. The smaller farms are not applicable for robust harvesting machines which is another challenge for the paddy farmers.

Moreover, the water management in agricultural fields of marginal farmers is very poor. Farmers rely on monsoon rain for paddy cultivation in around months of May till September. Most farmers are unable to grow vegetables in winter season due to lack of proper irrigation facilities in field. Only those farmers having farms near river banks , cultivate vegetables in winter season. This highlights the need of proper sustainable water management strategies which can be implemented in these fields.
